How long should you talk before meeting someone from online?

Updated 2026-11-04 · 6 minute read

There is no correct number of messages or days. What matters is that you decide in advance when you will make the call, so the conversation does not drift on until it fades.

The risk on both sides

Meet too quickly and you may spend an evening with someone you could have ruled out in a few messages. Wait too long and you build an imagined version of a person that real life cannot match, or the conversation simply runs out of energy. Many online conversations die in that second zone.

Set a decision point

A decision point is a date or a number of exchanges at which you will both choose: meet, or close. It makes the pace deliberate, and it gives you both permission to say no without drama.

Reasonable examples:

These are starting points, not rules. Some people want to meet sooner. Others need longer, for good reasons, including past experiences.

What to look for before you say yes

How to suggest meeting

I have really enjoyed this week of letters. Would you like to meet for coffee or a walk somewhere public? Totally fine if you would rather keep writing for a while.A direct, low-pressure invitation.

How to say no kindly

Thank you for writing. I have enjoyed hearing about your week, but I do not feel the connection I would want in order to meet. I wish you well.Short, honest, and final. No need to explain more.

A clear no is kinder than silence. It lets the other person move on.

How Linger Letters handles this

Linger Letters builds the decision point into the format. You exchange one letter a day for seven days. After day seven, if you both opt in, the app suggests a curated real-world plan. If either of you passes, the line closes. The idea is that nobody is left wondering. See what slow dating means.
